Endodontics
Also known as "root canal" treatment, is an effective way to save a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. The most common reason for a root canal is if a tooth has a deep cavity or fracture that causes bacteria to reach the pulp or nerve of the tooth and infect it. A root canal is actually a filling in the canals of a tooth. When the nerves of a tooth die, the nerves are removed and the canals are cleaned out and enlarged. A special filling is placed in the canals and the tooth is sealed off. Usually after a tooth has had a root canal, the tooth will become brittle and vulnerable to fracturing. The ideal treatment plan to protect and add strength is a crown placement.
